A/N this is a
continuation of the last scene in Guilt. What did Harm do while
waiting to hear Mac was safe?

It’s late in the day and everyone is
clearing their desks preparing to go home. Everyone except me, you
see my partner and best friend is on assignment in Indonesia at the
American consulate . . . under attack. Not that I’m worried, my
best friend is a Marine and I know she can take care of herself.
However I’m going to wait here until we have official word. The
Admiral said it shouldn’t be long.
Bud and Harriett were
in my office earlier. They wanted to keep me company while I waited.
Harriet started to mention about another time, waiting for official
word, she stopped in mid-thought, embarrassed, I know she meant
well.
I can’t imagine what you went through that night.
At least I know where you are. I have a good idea what you’re
going through, what you’re doing. That night, you only knew my
plane had gone down in the Atlantic and I was missing.
Would
it surprise you to know I’ve been doing a lot of thinking
lately? Okay you can stop laughing now; I do on occasion think and
sometimes it’s not about flying. Maybe it was the mishap, or
maybe it was the downtime; of course if I really wanted to I could
blame it on Skates.
She came to see me before I was released
from the hospital. Did I tell you she was thinking about giving up
flying? She told me while we were waiting to do our night traps. She
met a guy and it was serious, getting married serious. But now she’s
changed her mind, she’s returning to the fleet, with her fiancé
support. She said the experience awakened her love of flying. I know
what you’re thinking, ‘oh great, just what he needed
something to awaken his love of flying’. Never fear marine, my
love of flying is just as strong now as it was before.
When I
asked her what changed, she replied “Life doesn’t feel
any different to you? You’ve been given a chance to take
another look at things, grab hold of things really important to you.”
Of course you know me I answered her question with a question.
Mac,
I don’t think my life is any different. I’ve just added
another experience to a long list of experiences; only this is one
that I really don’t care to repeat ever again!
But I
have been taking another look at things (that’s where the
thinking comes in). It really wasn't necessary because I've known all
along what I wanted. It’s the grabbing hold that’s the
difficult part. That’s what I struggle with every day. I wanted
you to know that and also know that I’m working on it.
Mac,
I promise someday . . .
Someday you won’t have to wait.
Someday I’ll be able to tell you how special you are to
me.
Someday I won’t have to say ‘I'm not involved
with Mac’.
Because someday I’ll be able to tell
you I love you.
