I have been super busy lately. Work, work, work. Haven't had much time to write anything, but managed to write this in a hurry.

The characters are not mine, but I'll borrow them for this story.

HBX Challenge July 2008

Unexpected surprise

“Well, Colonel. I know why you've been feeling bad lately.” Dr Clarice Watson sat down opposite her patient.

“And?” Mac was eager to know why she was exhausted all the time.

“First of all, you work to much.”

Mac gave her a 'tell me something I don't know look'. “I know.”

“Secondly, you are missing some vitamins.”

“Oh, that explains it.”

“Thirdly, you are pregnant and non of the things above is very healthy for an expectant mother.”

“What?” Mac had not seen that coming.

“I guess you didn't expect this then?”

“No, I didn't.”

“Well, you definitely are pregnant Colonel. And you need to start taking more care of yourself; that means less hours at work and regular meals and you need to eat vitamins.”

“Okay.” Mac was still not quite sure of what was happening.

“Why don't we schedule an appointment in a week. It will give you some time to wrap your head around this.” Doctor Watson saw that her patient wasn't ready for any more information at that point.

“That sounds good.” Mac stood. “I'll call about the appointment.”

“Good.” Doctor Watson stood as well. “And Sarah, please call me if you need anything or if you have any questions.”

“Thank you Doctor.” Mac shook her hand and left the office.

Half an hour later she was home in her apartment, still not sure what to do with herself. She changed her clothes and sat down on the couch. A baby? She would be a mother. Harm would be a... Harm! She needed to tell him.

God, they had agreed to start at the beginning, then they ended up having sex. They both freaked out and decided that it was too early after both their break-ups to start something new. They agreed to work on getting their friendship back on track before they would take anything to the bedroom again. Off course they both had problems looking in to each others eyes after what transpired between them the night after the JAGathon, making it difficult to work on their friendship.

Mac rose from the couch and grabbed her keys, she couldn't deal with this on her own.

Twenty minutes later she knocked on his door.

“Hey Mac.” Harm greeted her.

Mac walked past him and in to the apartment without a word. She turned and studied him. It looked like he was in a good mood, he looked relaxed and free of problems. Mac knew that in a few minutes she would make him feel tense and give him some problems. She wanted to leave without telling him, but she knew that he needed to know what they had done. Created a life! They couldn't create a relationship between them , but apparently creating a new life they had no problems doing.

“So Mac, you going to stand there all night?” Harm looked at her with worry in his eyes. “Everything all right?”

Mac focused on him again. “Have you ever had your life turned upside down?”

“This is about what we did?” He stepped closer to her and she could feel the warmth coming from his body; making it hard for her to concentrate. He had done the same the night they made a baby; he had stepped close to her, leaned forward to kiss her cheek and then they had kissed. Soon clothes were on the floor and the bed was filled with activity.

“Mac? Hello!” Harm waved a hand in front of her face to get her attention.

“It sort of has to do with what we did.” She turned away from him, needing to create some distance.

“Sort of?” He stepped close to her again.

“Can you stay away from me, it's hard to concentrate when you are close.” Mac took a few steps away from him again.

Harm looked smug. “What effect is that Mac?”

Mac rolled her eyes. “You can wipe that smile off your face Rabb. I just need to have some space when I tell you what I'm about to tell you.”

Harm laughed a little. “What exactly is it that you want to say, because so far you make no sense?”

Mac sat down on one of his bar stools. “It's not that easy Harm. I haven't really wrapped my head around it my self yet, so it's hard to talk about.”

“What is it Mac?” Harm was starting to sound impatient.

“We kind of created something that night.” Mac whispered.

Harm got smug again. “We kind of created a lot of things that night Mac, fireworks to name one.”

“Can you just be serious for like a second?” Mac felt like crying.

Harm sobered up. “Sorry Mac, what exactly are you referring to when it comes to what we created that night?”

“A baby.” Mac felt tears escape her eyes as she said it.

Harm dropped his arms down by his side and his jaw fell slightly downwards.

Mac waited for thirty seconds.“ Are you going to say something?” She sniffled.

“I'm...I don't know.” He shook his head to clear it some. “Are you sure?”

“My Doctor says so.” Mac wiped her tears away.

“Are you okay? How are you feeling?” Harm was suddenly very concerned.

“I'm fine, just really tired lately.” Tears escaped her eyes again.

Harm stepped close to her and took her hand and made her stand before he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her head. “It's going to be fine Mac.”

Mac let him hold her for a second before she looked up to meet his eyes. “You really think so?”

Harm stared in to her eyes. “We'll deal with it together, it will be fine. We might have to rearrange our lives a little for a baby to fit in, but as long as we are together what could go wrong?”

“Do you really want me to answer that?”

Harm laughed. “No, I'd rather you didn't.”

Mac smiled. “What do we do now?”

“You are asking me? I thought you were the one to come up with the dispassionate plan?”

“We make an appointment with my Doctor for next week and use this week to get used to the idea of becoming parents.”

“That sounds like a good plan.” Harm took her hand and led them towards his bedroom. “Now that we are pregnant and all I guess it's all right to share a bed again. Let's get a good nights sleep and we'll start planning tomorrow.”

“That sounds like a good plan too.” Mac released his hand and found a T-Shirt in his closet to wear. They both stripped down and crawled in to bed. Harm wrapped his arms around her and kissed her head.

Mac was almost asleep when she heard Harm whisper. “I'm going to be a dad.”

Mac smiled. “I'm going to be a mom.”

Ten years later

“Daddy!” Adeline Mackenzie Rabb's voice ran through the house.

Harm ran upstairs to see what all the commotion was about and found his daughter on top of the stairs waiting for him.

“What's up princess?” Harm sat down to be on his daughter's level.

“You know how I had one cat this morning?” Adeline looked ready to explode with information.

“Yes.” Harm answered unsure where his daughter was going with this question.

“And you know how I said I wanted another cat?” Adeline's eyes widened.

“Adeline, we talked about this. One cat is enough.” Harm explained for the hundred time.

“But now I have six of them.” Adeline's face split in to a smile.

“What?”

“Come see daddy.” Adeline took her daddy's hand and walked to her room. On her bed lay her cat with five small lumps by her side. “See daddy, I have cat baby's now.”

“MAC!” Harm yelled.

A few seconds later his wife was by his side, followed by their youngest child Benjamin. “What's up Harm?”

“Yes, what's up daddy?” Seven year old Benjamin repeated his mother's words.

“Look.” Harm pointed towards Adeline's bed.

“I have cat baby's now mommy.” Adeline proudly said.

“Oh.” Mac stepped closer to the bed to look at the new addition to the Rabb family.

“That's all you are going to say? How could this happen? I thought she was on the pill?” Harm rambled.

“Well Harm, if we go back ten years...” Mac stepped behind her daughter and kissed her head.

Harm looked at the two identical smiles and couldn't help to smile as well. “I guess when you put it that way...”

Adeline didn't understand what her parent's were talking about, but she decided it wasn't as important as her cats. “Does this mean I can keep them?”

Harm shook his head. “No way. They can stay until they are old enough to go away from their mother. Then we'll find them some good homes.”

“But...” Adeline started.

“No.” Harm grabbed her and lifted her up in the air. “I love you princess, but there is no way you'll trick me in to letting you keep them.” Harm kissed her cheek. “Don't worry, we'll find them good homes.”

“Promise?” Adeline looked uncertain.

“I promise.” Harm put her down on the ground.

“Okay then.” She smiled. “At least I'll get to keep them a little bit.”

Harm took Mac's hand and they left their daughter's room. Harm turned to his wife. “Have you ever had your heart stop?”

Mac laughed. “You know she's going to talk you in to keeping at least one of the kittens right?”

“Yeah, I know.” Harm kissed her. “I love you baby.”

“I love you too.”
