A chance to fix things
Chapter
two
A week later
Mac was walking in to her
office and found Harm sitting in her chair, he smiled when he saw
her.
“Hey Mac.”
“What are you doing
in my chair?” Mac sat down in one of her visitor chairs and put
the files she'd been carrying on her desk.
“It's better
than your visitor chairs.” Harm got up. “But now you
should have it.”
“That's okay, I was on my way
home anyway. What are you doing here?” Mac got on her feet and
started packing her stuff.
“Just wanted to buy you
dinner.” He took her briefcase from her and followed her out
the door.
“You can pick up something and come over to
my place, I don't feel like going out. I'm tired, it's been a long
week.” Mac pushed the button on the elevator and the doors
opened. They both walked in.
“That's fine. What do you
want to eat?” He smiled. “You can have anything you
want.”
“I don't know, maybe Chinese.” Mac
waited for the doors to open before she walked out of the elevator
and headed out of JAG. Harm followed her to her car and gave her the
briefcase he'd been carrying.
“I'll see you back at your
place.” Harm watched her get in and drive away before he got in
to his own car.
Later that night
Mac and Harm
had just finished dinner and Harm was cleaning up while Mac was lying
on her couch. Harm sat down in one of her chairs after he had
finished cleaning; he didn't say anything, he just stared at
her.
“What?” Mac said after a few
minutes.
“Nothing, you just look good pregnant. I guess
I'm still getting used to the idea of becoming a father, it's new.”
He pulled an envelope from his pocket. “I looked at the picture
you brought. It's amazing.” He smiled.
“You can
keep that one, I have one too.” Mac looked closer at him,
noticing his insecurity. “If you have any questions, you can
ask.”
Harm hesitated.“I guess I'm just
wondering...what was your reaction when you found out?”
Mac
smiled and put her hand on her belly. “First I was surprised, I
hadn't expected it. Then I got the feeling that everything would be
okay; I've always wanted to be a mother, I just figured I'd be
married or at least in a relationship. It felt like everything fell
in to place.”
“We can still be a family
Mac.”
“Harm...” Mac said with warning.
“I
know I screwed up. I ruined everything because I was jealous, it's
not something I'm proud of. But I still think we can make it work,
I'm willing to do whatever it takes.” He looked at her with
determination, he wanted her to understand how sorry he was.
“It's
not just about Paraguay, it's a big part of it yes; we both said some
stupid things in that hotel room, you weren't alone. It's also about
the six months after Paraguay.” Mac sat up in the couch and put
her feet on the floor. “I really needed you to return those
calls.”
Harm looked away. “I wish I would have
returned them too. I missed six months of your pregnancy, I can never
get that back.” He focused on her again. “But the worst
part is that I walked away without fighting for the most important
thing in my life.”
Mac saw the pain in his eyes; the
best friend in her wanted to hug him, but the woman in love kept her
from doing that. She needed more time. “I wish you hadn't.”
A tear escaped her eye. “I know I'm partly responsible; I
pushed you away.”
Harm stood and walked to over sit
beside her. “I'm sorry I accused you of jumping in to bed with
Clay, that was mean and uncalled for. I ruined the most special night
of my life, I have never felt the way I felt that night.”
Mac
let her tears fall freely. “I thought I had finally found true
love. That moment all my pain was taken away, all my past mistakes
seemed minor and nothing else seemed more important than you and
me.”
“What about now?” Harm wiped away a
freshly fallen tear from her cheek.
“We have three
months until the baby comes, let's just see.” Mac smiled
through the tears. “I need time to heal my heart.”
“I'm
going to prove to you that we can make it work.” He kissed her
head and stood. “I'm going to go now, I have work
tomorrow.”
Mac wiped away her tears and took a deep
breath before she stood and followed him to the door. “You work
on a Saturday?”
“I'm a crop duster now. It
doesn't pay much, but I'll get to fly and it gives me time to think
about what I want to do with my career.” He kissed her cheek
and put his hand on her belly. “Have a good night.”
He
was almost out the door when he turned and pulled a jewelery box out
of his pocket. “I came to Paraguay with every intention of
putting it on your finger.” He opened the box and gave it to
her. “You keep it, let me know when you are ready to wear it.”
He smiled. “I'll be ready when you are.”
Then he
left, leaving Mac with a beautiful engagement ring.
