Chapter 3

A chance to fix things

Ten weeks later

Mac walked in to Harm's office carrying some files. Harm had been back to JAG for eight weeks now, Mac was still getting used to having him in the office next to hers again.
For six months she had walked the halls of JAG Headquarters with the feeling that someone was missing, she had tried to move on, tried to except that he was gone. Then three months ago he had come back into her life; three weeks after the night in his apartment, when she had told him that he was going to be a father, he was back at JAG.

The last ten weeks they had worked hard to get their friendship back, Mac was starting to get back all the feelings she had tried to bury when Harm was working for the CIA. She had to admit that she was still in love with her best friend; she still hadn't put his ring on her finger, but she knew that she would eventually.

“Here's the rest of my cases, enjoy.” Mac smiled as she put the files on his desk.

Harm gave her a horrified look. “I hope you gave Sturgis and Bud as many as you gave me.”

Mac laughed. “Don't worry, Sturgis is taking over as chief of staff, he's getting most of my work.”

Harm got a sad look on his face. “I just got back and now you're leaving...I'm not sure I like that.”

Mac sat down in one of his visitor chairs. “I don't have much choice Harm, in two weeks this kid is going to come shooting out of me. I guess you'll just have to manage without me.”

“I guess so...At least I'll still get to see you after work.” He stood. “Are we ready to go home?” Harm moved in to her apartment a week ago; they had decided that they would live there until the baby was born.

Mac stood as well. “Sure, I can't wait to get out of this uniform and in to something comfortable.”

Just as they left his office, Sturgis approached them. “You about ready to go on maternity leave?”

“I am.” Mac smiled. “Enjoy your new position.”

Sturgis groaned. “I never knew the amount of extra work you had with that position, how you had any time to work on cases I don't get. At least now I understand why your office always looked like a tornado went through it”

Harm laughed at Sturgis last statement. Mac glared at him. “Shut up.”

Harm sobered up. “Sorry.”

Now it was Sturgis turn to laugh. “You have been living with her for a week and she's got you whipped already Harm”

“What? That's not true!” Harm whined.

Sturgis just smiled and walked away.

Mac walked to the elevator, with Harm right behind her. “Don't worry Harm, Sturgis is just teasing.”

“I know.” Then he smiled. “Let me decide what we have for dinner tonight.”

Mac laughed. “Sure Harm, you're the boss.”

Later that night

Harm and Mac were on the couch. Mac sat between Harms legs, leaning against his chest and surrounded by his strong arms. The TV was on, but non of them were interested in the film that was being shown.

“I can't believe that in two weeks we'll have a son.” Harm whispered in her ear. “Are you scared?”

“I don't know...I haven't thought about it.” She turned to look at his face. “Are you?”

“I'm mostly excited I think. But I guess I'm a little scared.” He kissed her. He'd been doing that a lot lately; he'd read in a book that it was important to give the pregnant woman kisses and caresses. Making her feel loved and cherished.

Harm had never in his life worked as hard as he had the last ten weeks to show someone how much he cared. He had started the day after he'd given her the ring; he called her the next morning to tell her that he loved her and to wish her a wonderful day. He'd done the same thing the next day, the day after that and every day since. First he hadn't gotten a response from her, but as the weeks went by she started saying it back. He would show up at her door every night with dinner; sometimes he made her dinner and sometimes he brought take out. Every night before he went home he'd kiss her and tell her that he loved her.

One night about four weeks ago she'd asked him to spend the night; he'd never forget the sound of her voice as he was about to leave. He had kissed her and told her that he loved her, then he had turned to leave. She had told him that she loved him too, then she held out her hand and asked him to stay with her. He had smiled and taken the outstretched hand, then he told her that he would stay forever if she wanted him to.

That night, for the first time since Paraguay, he had made love to the only woman he had ever truly loved. The fact that she was carrying his child made the experience even more powerful; either one of them had ever felt anything like it before.

Every night since then he had spent most of his time with her in her apartment, until she asked him to move in. Harm had put his loft for sale the next day and started packing. They had to rent a storage facility, because there was no way they could fit everything in to her apartment. They both wanted to buy a house, but they decided to wait until after the baby was born before they would start looking.
Harm felt that he had done good when it came to showing Mac how much he loved her, the only thing missing was for her to wear the ring he had given her.

Harm noticed that Mac had fallen asleep, he kissed her head and took a hold of the hand he hoped someday would wear his ring.
