Hard times

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

Damn! Damn! Damn!

Why do you have to be so stupid?

Harm was pacing the living room floor. He had just had a major fight with Mac, and he was feeling terrible. They had been trying to have a baby for a year now, without any results. They just got a message from the Doctor that it hadn't worked this time either. They had gone from trying the natural way, to medication, and now they had tried Intrauterine Insemination. They still were not pregnant. Mac was tired of trying, and she was tired of the disappointment every time it did not work. Harm knew she did not want to go through this any more, but he also knew that it meant that they had to give up on their dream to have a baby. They had been fighting a lot lately, and they were both tired and frustrated. The romance, once so strong in their relationship, had gone to hell, and they were barely intimate any more. Scheduled sex, had made their once great sex life, very bad.

They had been married for six months, before they decided that having great sex did not make them pregnant. They had decided to see a specialist, and after that there was hard work to have their dream come trough. At first they had fun, and they both were very exited. As the months flew by, and all the disappointments came flowing, they had drifted apart. It had come to a final blow tonight, when the Doctor had called with the results of Mac's tests. She had said goodbye to the Doctor, turned to Harm and said; “It's over Harm. I'm done with this.”

He had exploded! How could she just give up on their dream? He couldn't believe it. They had said some cruel things to each other, and it had ended when he had yelled; “Dammit, Colonel! You're a Marine. Fight like one!”

She had turned away from him, and ran towards their room, slamming the door. That was thirty minutes ago. He didn't have the nerve to face her. He was ashamed of his reaction. He should have seen it coming, he was surprised that it had not come sooner.

He looked at the door to their room.

Come on Harm, be a man. Go talk to her. The voice in his head said.

He stepped closer to the door, and opened it. Mac was sitting on the bed, with her knees pulled up, and her face buried in her knees.

“Hey baby, I'm sorry.” He walked inside the room, and sat down on the bed. She didn't look up.

“I was out of line, I shouldn't have said what I said. I'm so sorry.” He put his hand on her shoulder. He felt her tense up at his touch.

“Please talk to me.” He didn't remove his hand.

She lifted her head, and looked at him. It was easy to see that she had been crying.

“I don't know what to say Harm.”

“Well, you could start by telling me how you feel.” He moved closer to her, until she was sitting between his legs.

“I don't know how I feel any more.” She buried her head in his shoulder. “I just know that I can't do this any more Harm” He almost didn't hear her, because she was talking in too his shoulder.

“I'm sorry Harm, but I want our marriage back. I need to be able to have fun with you, and make love to you.” She lifted her head and looked at him. “I know you want a baby, I do to. But I don't want a baby if it's going to end our marriage.”

“I don't want that either. And you're right, we need to have some fun. I don't remember the last time we said how much we love each other, or had a romantic dinner and made love.” He kissed her head. “And I really do love you baby. So much Mac. You are the best thing that ever happened to me.”

“I love you too Harm.” She kissed him. “Can we promise each other one thing? If we don't get pregnant after one more try, we stop. We could look in to adoption, or fostering. But we can't go on like this”

“Okay, I agree. One more try, and we'll stop. And we have to start talking together again, and spend some time thinking about something else than a baby. We should just have some fun.” He smiled at her, and she laughed.

“God, I've missed that smile.” She kissed him again.

“I've missed that laughter, and I promise you I'll smile more, if you promise me you'll laugh more.” He held out his hand to her.

“I promise.” She took his hand. “Now what was it you said about making love.” She pushed him down on the bed, and kissed him. “I think we need to start with some of that fun we talked about.” She said between kisses.

It was not the end to all their problems, but it was a start.

And fun they had...
