Harm’s Apartment
North of Union Station

What was that noise?

Groggy, Harm sat up in bed, looking around the apartment. He frowned when he saw he was alone in the bed. Sighing, he rested his head against his knees, regaining focus. What was that noise?

It was coming from the living room.

He stood and grabbed his boxers, slipping them back on as he made his way to the shadowy figure standing in front of the window, wrapped in the navy blue sheet. The noise was coming from her.

Sniffles. That’s what he heard. He heard her sniffling. This meant she had tears to accompany the sniffles. But why was she crying?

“Hey,” he whispered, laying a hand on her bare shoulder.

She jerked at the touch, turning to face him, her eyes red and swollen. “Hi,” she whispered, tightening the sheet around her.

“What’s wrong?” he whispered, letting his fingers brush over her soft cheek, flicking the tears away.

Why was she crying? She had no business to be crying now that all of her dreams had practically come true. Sitting on its rightful place on her left ring finger was a beautiful diamond ring. Sitting on its rightful place on General Creswell’s desk was her letter of resignation.

“I just couldn’t sleep. Then all the emotions of tonight caught up with me,” she laughed, shaking her head. “I’ll be fine.”

Although he wanted to spend the rest of the night with her, Harm figured she should probably return to her own apartment. Maybe she’d feel better surrounded by her own things. They just came back to his simply because it was closer to McMurphy’s.

“Maybe you should go home?”

Laughing, Mac shook her head. “Then who would be here to protect you?” she said, slipping her arms around his neck.

Harm pressed a kiss to her lips, moving away a fraction of an inch. “I appreciate your concern for my safety, but don’t you think you’d be better off going home and getting a good night’s sleep?”

“I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I was home. I seldom do,” Mac whispered back, pressing another kiss to his lips.

“Insomnia?”

She nodded, resting her forehead against his. She could get used to this. Him. Being with him. Everything about him.

He knew she should go home to her own bed, but Harm tugged her gently back to his bedroom. “Come on. I’ll show you a cure for insomnia.”

She raised an eyebrow and followed him back up the steps, falling back onto the bed, falling back into his kisses and his touch.

About an hour later she was curled up in his side, fast asleep for the first time in a very long time.

Harm hugged her closer, kissing her head. He smiled and stared up at the ceiling. She would never suffer from insomnia again. Neither would he now that they were finally together.
